(1554-1584)
   royal figure
Born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, François, duke of Anjou, was the fourth son of henry II and Catherine de' medici. At first called the duke of Alençon, he was very ambitious and intrigued with the Protestants, rejoining the prince de condé and putting himself forth as a leader of the rebels. After the Peace of Monsieur (1576), he intrigued with william of orange and went to the Netherlands. But he quickly became unpopular. His death left the succession to the throne to Henry of Navarre, the future Henry IV.
